Chapter 10 - Robyn

Robyn hadn’t known who the large man was that scooped up Angie, but she hadn’t hesitated to follow him toward the cabin, knowing she would have had trouble carrying her patient so easily. She had hesitated when the ruckus behind her rose in volume, and to be quite honest she couldn’t blame the construction guys for being upset by lightning striking like that. When Chas had yelled, she could feel the power in his voice, though she didn’t know what it was. Spinning in the doorway, she witnessed the way everyone froze before turning to focus on Chas, and from the body language of those around, she had the distinct impression some of the construction workers would have been cowering from whatever it was she felt when her lover shouted.

When no one moved, she was relieved that Chas began speaking calmly, and left him to it. Whatever he’d done she could ask about later when Angie was tucked into bed. Shivering at the odd way some of the construction workers were glaring at Chas, she fled into the house to find the big man leaning over Angie on the couch. "No," she objected without even thinking about it. "Would you mind moving her to the bed? It’ll be easier for me to examine her there."

He glanced up, surprised to see her by the look on his face, but nodded. "And you are?" he asked, even as he gently scooped up Angie once more and carried her to the bed.

Robyn grabbed her bag that had still been sitting next to the couch since she’d left it there yesterday afternoon. "I’m Robyn. Her nurse, though I’m not sure I’m equipped to handle…" She swallowed. She’d been avoiding the memory of how lightning had hit Angie, but she couldn’t keep it from blossoming again as she approached her patient.

"Is she going to be okay?" The question was hesitant, but his expression was one of honest concern.

Robyn unconsciously let out a dry laugh. "I’m not familiar with her biology. That would have killed most people instantly." Herself, for instance, had she still been supporting Angie when the electricity hit. She couldn’t help but shudder at the thought. How could she stay at Angie’s side—or Chas’—if she was in that kind of danger? Still, she pulled out her stethoscope and took Angie’s pulse, which was erratic but strong, and checked her breathing. Unlike a regular patient with electric shock, Angie’s breathing didn’t sound labored, and her heart was definitely still beating, if too fast. "Can you take off her shoes for me, please?"

Whomever he was seemed ready to do anything she asked, hovering near the end of the bed when he’d removed Angie’s gardening clogs. Robyn removed one of her socks to check for exit burns, and he did the other once he saw it. Though Angie’s feet were more red than they should be on the soles, there weren’t any visible burns. It seemed impossible, but there weren’t really signs of electric shock that she could see.
